The international 12mR yacht enjoyed its first golden era in the 1920's and 30's when well-to-do Englishmen and Americans wanted to participate in the 'Sport of Kings'. The Twelve enjoyed Olympic status from 1906 to 1920. The Finnish, formerly Scottish Twelve Heatherbell came third (out of three) in the 1912 Olympic regatta at Nynashamn, Sweden. The class rose to prominence again in 1958 after selection for the America's Cup series. In Fremantle 1987 a fine field of fifteen Twelves participated in the Cup eliminations.
Pre-war 12-metre design was dominated by the Brits Charles Nicholson and William Fife, plus the Americans Nathanael Herreshoff and Starling Burgess. They were soon overtaken by the rising star Olin Stephens. His breakthrough Twelve was Intrepid, the first to sport a separate rudder, successfully defending the Cup in 1967 and 1970. She was followed by Courageous in 1974 and 1977', and by Freedom in 1980. Despite many tries by England and France, it was the country 'down under', Australia, that managed to first wrest the 'Old Mug' from the Yankees. After 132 years, the Cup left the States, thanks to Australia II, the little winged wonder designed by the eccentric Ben Lexcen.
In 1987, Dennis Conner managed to win back the Cup with his Twelve Stars & Stripes. When New Zealand surprisingly challenged with a huge non-Twelve, the interest for building new Twelves fizzled. The 12mR is a heavy, deep and wet beast, having no accommodation whatsoever for its 12-man crew. Intrinsically slow, it gives few knots for the dollar. Despite the example of Ted Turner, winning some offshore races with his Twelve American Eagle, the remaining 12mR yachts are mainly used for ferrying tourists.

Kansainvälinen 12mR koki ensimmäisen kulta-aikansa 1900-luvun alussa kun Englannin ja Amerikan varakas luokka halusi osallistua 'kuninkaiden urheilumuotoon'. Nynäshamnin olympiapurjehduksissa vuonna 1912 Skotlannista hankittu, Suomea edustanut Heatherbell saavutti kolmannen (eli viimeisen) sijan. 12mR -luokka nousi uuteen suosioon vuonna 1958 America's Cupin kilpailuvälineenä. Fremantlen Americas Cup -karsintoihin osallistui viisitoista 12-metristä.
Tunnetuimmat 12mR -suunnittelijat ennen sotia olivat englantilaiset Charles Nicholson ja William Fife, sekä amerikkalaiset Nathanael Herreshoff ja Starling Burgess. Ikääntyvät herrasmiehet saivat pian antaa tilaa nuorelle komeetalle nimeltä Olin Stephens. Hänen merkittävin 12-metrisensä oli pistoperäsimellä varustettu Intrepid, joka menestyksellisesti puolusti vanhaa mukia vuosina 1967 ja 1970. Saman tekivät Stephens-veneet Courageous vuosina 1974 ja 1977 sekä Freedom vuonna 1980. Englannin ja Ranskan tekemistä yrityksistä huolimatta amerikkalaisten 132-vuotisen voittoputken katkaisi lopulta vuonna 1983 kuitenkin Australia. Temppu tehtiin ensimmäisellä siipikölisellä 12-metrisellä, Ben Lexcenin piirtämällä Australia II:lla.
Cupin takaisin Yhdysvaltoihin toi Dennis Conner Stars & Stripes -veneellään vuona 1987. Kun Uusi Seelanti haasteessaan yllättäen luopui 12-metrisistä, mielenkiinto luokkaa kohti romahti. Onhan 12-metrinen luonteeltaan raskas, syvä ja märkä, eikä tarjoa 12 hengen miehistölleen edes yösijaa. Suorituskykyyn verrattuna vene on kallis – taalaa kohden saa suhteellisen vähän solmuja. Vaikka Ted Turner onnistui avomeripurjehduksissa 12-metrisellään American Eagle, luokan harvoja eloonjääneitä veneitä käytetään lähinnä turistien kiertoajeluihin.
