Special class ”C”

The “C” type yacht was born at the initiative of the Finnish Sailing Federation. The rule was based on the old 15m2 class. This new national class was officially inaugurated in 1950. The aim was to create a more affordable class than the “A” type yacht, while keeping the principle of free design to a numerical rule. The C-yacht was a significant design class during the 1950s and 1960s in Finland.

A total of 32 C-yachts were built, up to 1956. The work of the marine architect Gösta Kyntzell was very important in the development of the class. He designed most of the yachts, racking up an impressive total of 25. The C class rule included an unusual limit on the maximum height of the mast, imposed by the clearance needed to safely pass under the old Lauttasaari bridge, to reach the Helsinki racecourses to the south.

Erikoisluokka C 

C-vene syntyi Suomen Purjehtijaliiton aloitteesta. Pohjana säännölle oli vanha 15m2- luokka. Uusi venetyyppi virallistettiin vuonna 1950. Tavoitteena oli saada aikaan A-veneitä edullisempi vaihtoehto ja C-vene olikin 1950-60-lukujen aikana Suomessa merkittävä konstruktioluokka.

C-veneitä rakennettiin kaiken kaikkiaan 32 kappaletta, viimeinen vuonna 1956. Suunnittelija Gösta Kyntzellin merkitys luokan kehityksessä oli varsin huomattava – hän piirsi veneistä suurimman osan, yhteensä 25 kappaletta. Erikoisluokka C:n mittoihin mainitaan liittyvän myös erikoinen epävirallisempi sääntö; niiden piti kyetä purjehtimaan kilpailuihin Lauttasaaren vanhan sillan alitse.
