Tourist Cruiser

The Tourist Cruiser, or T-Cruiser, originated from an interesting joint project to promote tourism in Finland and the image of Finland abroad, for the upcoming Helsinki Olympics in 1940. The Finnish Steamship Company (EFFOA), the Finnish Tourism Association and Åbo Båtvarf (The Turku Boatyard) jointly commissioned four yachts for chartering to foreign tourists. In this fashion, tourists were given the opportunity to explore the unique Finnish archipelago. A company named Oy Cruising in Finland Ab was established to manage this project.

Jarl Lindblom was entrusted with the design work. The first four yachts were launched in 1937. They were painted in easily recognizable colours. Mary-Anne was light green, Tiira light gray, Erstan beige and Endeavour white. Three of the yachts were stationed in Helsinki, while Erstan, named after the inlet to Turku, was stationed there.

The yachts were equipped with all amenities, including toilet and pantry. The 15-pound weekly rent included insurance, sea charts, tableware and cooking pots, and even a small dinghy. The spacious yachts provided five berths and standing room in the cabin.

Finally, a total of 14 yachts were built, out of which four were chartered out. Seven remained in private ownership in Finland, while the remaining three were sold to England. The English yachts were built from Oregon pine, while the hulls of the Finnish yachts were built partly from Peroba, partly from pine. The yachts were equipped with a 10-horsepower Kermath engine.

Turistkryssare

Turistkryssare, tai T-kryssare, sai alkunsa mielenkiintoisesta yhteisprojektista suomalaisen matkailun ja Suomi-kuvan edistämiseksi. Suomen höyrylaivaosakeyhtiö, Suomen matkailuyhdistys ja Turun veneveistämö rakennuttivat yhteistyössä neljä venettä, joita oli tarkoitus vuokrata ulkomaisille turisteille. Näin haluttiin luoda mahdollisuus tutustua ainutlaatuiseen saaristoomme. Asiaa hoitamaan perustettiin yritys, jonka nimeksi tuli Oy Cruising in Finland Ab.

Vuonna 1937 Jarl Lindblomin suunnittelemia veneitä valmistui ensin neljä kappaletta. Ne oli maalattu helposti tunnistettavin värein. Mary-Anne oli vaaleanvihreä, Tiira vaaleanharmaa, Erstan Beige ja Endeavour valkoinen. Veneistä kolme sijoitettiin Helsinkiin ja Erstan, eli Airisto, tietysti Turkuun.

Veneet oli varustettu kaikilla mukavuuksilla, kuten wc:llä ja pentterillä. 15 punnan viikkovuokraan kuuluivat muun muassa vakuutukset, merikortit, astiat ja jopa pieni jolla. Veneissä oli viisi makuupaikkaa ja kajuutassa oli seisomakorkeus.

Veneitä rakennettiin lopulta yhteensä 14 kappaletta, joista neljä siis vuokrakäyttöön. Seitsemän jäi yksityisomistukseen Suomeen ja loput kolme myytiin Englantiin. Englantilaiset veneet tehtiin oregon-männystä, kotimaisista osan runko oli Perobaa, osan mäntyä. Veneet varustettiin kymmenen hevosvoiman Kermath-moottorilla.
